During the last few weeks summer has arrived in Vorarlberg (Austria) and while the temperatures are climbing to the thermometer’s top, we use the mild evenings for an after-work tour on our road bikes.
Already for the whole day our well-toned calves are tingling. After a long day in office we start off to our meeting point, riding on high frequency to get our circulation going. A short high five and we make our yearned way out of town.
The late afternoon sun still has plenty of power and apparently our tan lines will be enhanced today. Switchbacks
Hairpin bend by hairpin bend, the street curls upwards. Frequently we are going out of the saddle and finding our proper rhythm. Our opened jerseys are fluttering in the wind. In the final meters, it goes right down to business again: „Pull yourself together, now it‘s going to be steep!“ - Daniel knows the route like the back of his hand. Although we have often conquered the Pfänder, the climb won‘t get any shorter. We pedal once more with a lot of power and demand our legs in the final sprint until we reach our redeeming goal.
Once we’ve reached the top, we take a deep breath and marvel at the fascinating light the lake throws up to us. While we enjoy the ever-impressive sight of the countless boats on the water, we fill up our energy reserves with self-made power bars. After a short review on the ascent we look forward to plunge into the descent. "Descents are not for recovery!" - Susan smirks and looks forward to feel the fresh airstream all over her body.
We swing back onto our bikes and immediately feel how our endorphines rise synchronously with the pace. On the completely empty road we can totally concentrate on the ideal racing line. With our hands on the lower link, we literally merge with our racing machines. While flying downwards one switchback after the other, the speed rushes in our ears.
As we arrive at the bottom, the sun has almost reached the horizon. We hurry to the shore to see it going down right at the other end of the lake. Quickly we pull over our vests and come to rest with a breathtaking sunset. We are already too late for the obligatory espresso, so we end the evening with a cool soda.
